my review of Percy Jackson and the Olympians (is the new tv show actually good?)

Picture this: I'm sitting on my couch, with this computer on my lap, staring at it intently as I hammer out these words. The TV in front of me is on Disney+, and the words "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" are emblazoned on the screen. The remote is set beside me, and I let out a long breath as I finally clicked the play button. Here I am, about to dive in to the long-awaited Percy Jackson  TV series.

I've heard many good things about this new addition. Is it worth the hype? In this review post, I'll be talking about the series and give you my honest opinions on it. And yes, I'm actually writing these words while watching the show.

After watching first 30 seconds of the percy jackson TV show

Maybe I'm taking this reaction post too far, because it's been only 37 seconds and I already paused the episode to write this. At this rate, it's going to take a decade to get through the season.

But in all seriousness, the beginning hooked me. The first sentence, "Look, I never wanted to be a half-blood," made us jump right in. And the ominous, dark camera shots of his face really set the mood. The best part, however, is probably the voiceover. His voice is low and rash, his tone conveys fear and danger.

Okay, I'm going to unpause it now and try to relax. Be right back!

While watching the first episode of the percy jackson TV show

Here are some notes I took while watching the show, and the explanations I added afterward are italicized underneath:

AWW PERCY LOOKS SO CUTE!! I LOVE THE SECOND GRADE VERSION OF HIM
during flashbacks, we saw the 2nd grade version of Percy, who was sooo adorable

GROVER'S SO SLAY!
No explanation needed. Grover really is slay, and that's a fact.

"If there's one thing I know about bullies, it's that you should never, ever stand up to them"
that's a direct quote from the show. When Grover said that, I burst out laughing.

the cgi is crazy! it's exactly what I imagined
When they were fighting the minotaur, or killing demons, it was so realistic and mystical! I was blown away by the special effects.

damn the acting is so good
it really is! I was so surprised by how well Walker Scobell played Percy. He's just 15, but so talented.

the relationship between mom and percy is so cute and i love it so my much, my heart warmed. AAAAH
This episode showed a lot of percy's relationship with his mom, something I loved. It was so touching to see the dynamic.

you can really see the love between them. she's the best mother, and percy is the cutest son.
I don't think there's a better way to put this. Sally Jackson was so supporting and my heart melted every time she interacted with her son.

[Quote redacted for spoiler reasons]
Anyone who watched the show, let me know in the comments if you can guess what this quote was about. Hint: It was angrily typed in all caps and accompanied by a tear or two, near the end of the episode.

Does the first episode of "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" live up to the hype?

Yes! It does! I really wasn't expecting the episode to be so amazing. It felt like the books came to life on the screen. So much better than the Harry Potter movie adaptations. I guess that's because in a TV series, you have a lot of time to tell the story, while a movie constricts you to two hours. But it's also because Rick Riordan made a lot of amazing decisions, like supporting Disney's race-blind casting.

Loosely based on the CAWPILE system I use for reviewing books, I'm going to rate the episode based on these three categories: Characters/Actors, Plot/Scenes, and Intrigue/Enjoyment.

Characters/Actors: Did they play their roles well?

Yeah! They did so well. So far, I've mainly seen Percy, Grover, and Percy's mom, and they did a great job of bringing to characters to life.

Did you know that Leah Jeffries, the actor for Annabeth, is just 14, Walker Scobell, who plays Percy, is 15, and Aryan Simhadri, who acts as Grover, is 16? My mind was blown- they're so good!

Plot/Scenes: Were the scenes true to what happened in the book?

Honestly? I loved the scenes! They were so funny and genuine... even though they weren't entirely accurate. For spoiler reasons, I'm not going to go into too much depth, but it really didn't matter too much that they differed slightly. The episode was still such an immersive experience.

Everything was shot so well. There were no choppy pieces, because everything was a seamless narrative. The show was well put-together and exactly the quality you would expect from Disney.

Intrigue/Enjoyment: Is it worth watching?

Yes, it is! I'm going to update this post after I've binged the whole season, but the bar is already set high.

Let me know whether you're planning to watch "Percy Jackson and the Olympians, and if so, what you thought of it!
